Our History
The first Baptist service in the town of Digby was held at the residence of Mrs. Tabitha McDormand in 1838, near or in the area of our present site. The first pastor was Rev. Samuel Bancroft, who attended to the home services from 1839 to 1845.
Home services continued until 1840, when land was acquired on First Avenue from Mr. William Bent, and a chapel was constructed. The deed was recorded January 12th, 1841, and witnessed by deacon W. H. Quigley and Thomas Patton. That property is presently the Bell Aliant parking lot.
That chapel was used for 39 years, after which the congregation moved to the old Scout Hall on Queen Street for seven years; that lot is now the parking lot for St. Patrick’s Roman Catholic Church. Rev. Joseph H. Saunders (1874-1883) was the first minister who began keeping written records.
The current building was purchased in 1885, and underwent a period of renovations; the first Baptist service was held here on January 10th, 1886.
On May 15, 1988, the Digby Baptist United Church celebrated its 150th anniversary with 135 guests in attendance at the morning service and 98 visitors present for the evening service.
Our Building’s History
The building was erected in 1876, by a Reformed Episcopal congregation, at a cost of $7,000. The group had split from nearby Trinity Anglican. However, the congregation gradually dwindled, so after a brief interlude of summer use by the Presbyterians, the building was for sale. It was purchased by the Digby Baptists in 1885 for the sum of $2,000.
Our church bell was made by the Vanduzen & Tift company in Cincinnati, Ohio. The bell was made in 1892, and is stamped with the name of the church, the name of the company, and the year it was made. The bell tower was once adorned with a stately steeple, but this was removed many years ago due to safety concerns.
The church hall, originally a separate building, was completed in 1899. In 1944, the kitchen, parlor, and Sunday School rooms were added on the north side. Then, in 1965, the choir room and three rooms were added, joining the hall to the main church building.
In 1924, a Casavant pipe organ was installed, costing $3,810. In 1970, organ was reconditioned and a new electric console replaced its older model.
A new baptistery was completed in the sanctuary in 1973, and the pastor’s office was built in 1974. Then, in 1979, new front oak doors were donated and installed at the Mount Street entrance.
From the fall of 2001 to the fall of 2003, the entire exterior of the church was replaced with modern insulation and wood siding. In 2004, the side entrance and one of the bathrooms was made wheelchair accessible. In February of 2006, the main entrance to the sanctuary was beautifully refurbished with funds donated by the late Louise Warne. Renovations and upkeep have continued in the years since.
